Compress attachments?

So, I'm creating my first zoho application for a friend who needs to replace an app they currently use. One of the biggest features they need to keep around is their ability to add photographs to records. In some cases they may have 20-30 photographs attached to a client record. These photo's only need to be accessible while the form is in certain status's but once the workflow has been completed and the record is being archived and used for reporting purposes only, those photo's can be compressed to save file size.

Their current system takes up a ton of disk space and has been saving uncompressed images for years. A waste of space that's not needed.

Does anyone know of a call that can be made to compress or 'zip' a group of attachments for a particular record. Or can anyone suggest any alternative method of dealing with the file size creep that's going to happen if they keep all these photo attachments?
