Remove all items from dynamic picklist in subform

I want to create a dynamic picklist in a subform. The problem is, I cannot clear all items from the picklist. Please see the screenshot below for an explanation of the problem. Can anyone suggestion a way of clearing the "Select A Child" item from the initial dropdown box? (I have to have at least one item in the dropdown box)
