tasks & subtasks link

Is there a way to establish a dependency between tasks and the underlying subtasks. I've seen the question posted about updating the % completion of the master task based on subtasks and I think I understood the answer to be (N)o it doesn't do this. What about the task period/duration? It seems that the subtasks should update the master task period. Is this not supported either? Thanks.
