Is there any way to update a formula field that calculates the number of days between the current date and a future date using a daily schedule?

I know you can't get a formula field to automatically recalculate (totally ridiculous but let's ignore that now). 

Is there a way to use schedules to update the formula field or another field that contains a number?

I'm thinking pass the difference between the current date and a future date to a numeric field.

Then on a daily basis use a schedule to subtract one day from the numeric field.

Could this work?

I don't seem to be able to get a schedule to change the numeric field. This is probably just from a lack of knowing how to change the value here.

How would i write this formula?  Could this work?
