Why is "Send Mail Notification" automatically selected when creating a task from the bottom of the task like "create task" link?

Why is "Send Mail Notification" automatically selected when creating a task from the bottom of the task like "create task" link?

In a task list, at the bottom of the list, there is an "add task" link.  When this link is used to add tasks, the "Send Mail Notification" is the default setting.  This is frustrating, as it is easy to forget to deselect it, and then send zillions of unnecessary emails to people with each task creation.
