Has anyone got a working solution for blocking a blueprint transition from a widget?

My use case is that the customer has an external warranty system that holds details based on an item serial number added to the ticket. They need the widget to confirm that the user has completed a warranty check on the external system for the currently entered serial number, before the blueprint transition can be completed.

We have tried adding flags to the ticket for the widget to set when the warranty check is complete and making them mandatory in the blueprint transition, but the transition will display and enable the field allowing the user to manually set it and bypass the widget warranty check.

My current solution is to open a modal popup automatically from the widget on entry to the transition, and re-open it if the user tries to close it without completing the warranty check. This works when the widget is in the ticket details right panel, but not in the blueprint transition. It looks like the modal is created but is not visible.
