Is there a way to on-the-fly insert manually an item into an invoice, without setting it up in Items?

For example: I received a free sample from a vendor.  Now I give it to customer free of charge.  While there is no financial transaction happening (one may argue that there is some "good will" received) but for me it's a way of having it recorded.
