I am looking to create custom modules to track customer assets. We install serialized and non-serialized equipment into customers vehicles. So we will have vehicles belonging to the customer then equipment that will belong to a vehicle (if installed) or just the customer if the equipment was removed from a vehicle. Each type of asset will have its own set of fields depending on the type of asset.

Vehicles-Vehicle info needs to be tracked and associated with a customer. 

Equipment-Equipment info needs to be tracked by the vehicle it is installed into. But if the equipment is removed from a vehicle (usually to be installed into a new vehicle at a later date) it should not belong to a vehicle but just a customer. We would also like to track the history of the equipment locations (all vehicles it has been installed into and removed from)

Looking for some guidance on the best way to accomplish this.
