client edit data in a form

Is there a way to retrieve data from the database and let the user edit the info?
eg
lets say the user needs to update their contact details, can they add say their name and a passcode into a form and have their existing details presented in another form for them to edit, and for it to be submitted back to the database (so that a duplicate record is not created).

Please talk slowly, i'm new to this!!
