Conditional filter based on user role

I have a look-up field which connects to our main family profile records.  We have instructors that teach families, and each instructor has their own login via a customer portal.  I've set up a filter on the look-up field so that the only family names that come up are the ones that are taught by the instructor that is logged in (so that they have access to only the names of the families that they teach).  

The issue is that if one of our administrators wants to add a record, the filter does not allow for any records to populate the look-up field - because the filter only allows for records with the associated teacher profile which matches the logged in user.  

Is there a way around this so that when it's an administrator who is logged in it cancels out the field filter?
