I am dissappointed with the current functionality of the Contact Roles related list in the Deals module. The inability to use them for email communications through deals gives them very little utility. There are several other threads that have been raised on these forums over the years about this subject.

The solution being to create multiple lookup fields on the Deal to handle multiple contacts is not a good one. Relying on Contact Roles which is dynamic and easy to work with through the API would make our lives much better, and our CRM implementations much cleaner.

Can you please provide an update on whether extended functionality for Contact Roles is coming, and if so, when?

I can't speak much about the capability of other CRM's in this area (if anybody else could chime in on that I would appreciate it), but I feel that Zoho's implementation of the Deal -> Contact relationship is cumbersome, and falling short here.
