editing cell content

I can't find information on how to edit data in an existing cell. I see the "edit" pencil icon in the view I'm using, I click it and the record opens for editing -- but the edits don't take. Is there a "save" or some other command that I'm missing? I need to be able to update data in existing records. Thanks!
