End User Update button

Greetings,

In my application, I need for end users to be able to log in, view rows, and click on a button or a link for a row that will update the row, setting one of the fields equal to the users login id.

I'm not sure how to beging to do this. I thought that I'd need to create a user defined function first. However, under 'script>>functions' when I create a new function and drag 'update records' into it, and click on 'edit' the screen freezes up, and I'm unable to edit anything.

I need two things.

First, am I going about this the right way to achieve my objective?
Second, why does that app freeze up when I try to edit my update?

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
