Fancy Formatting in Sendmail

I want to set the background color for some text in an email so that it looks like this.

I tried to set a variable to = <font style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #ff0000" color="#ffff66"> but it does not handle the quote mark " or the pound sign #.

Any suggestion?
