Hidden field problem

When fields have the "Hide this field to others" box checked, they are not available for viewing/editing by people that you are sharing the application with - only to yourself. Is there any way to change this? I want everybody to be able to access the form, but only those folks that I am sharing the application with to have access to certain fields. This seems like it should work that way, but appears that it does not... Am I missing something?
