Hyperlinks, File Locations, and Drive maps

In our private database, we want to have links to files inside our intranet. The files are not on a web-page, but in a shared drive.

For example:
\\drive08\docs\atn\ansi2\default\02522700.pdf
or
file://drive08/docs/atn/ansi2/default/00927701.pdf

These do not appear as clickable links in the application. I have tried to use both a plain text field and URL field. Both of these "links" work when I paste them into Internet Explorer.

Is there a trick to making these clickable?
