LOOKUP FIELD A updates LOOKUP FIELD B??

SITUATION:
The first field in my form is a picklist field named "FIRM" that pulls the abbreviated name of a company from the "FIRMS" form. (FIRMS.ABBREVIATION).
The second field is a picklist feild named "Master_Project_Number" that pulls values from the "MASTER_PROJECT" form. (MASTER_PROJECT.MASTER_PROJECT_NUMBER).
What I have been trying to do, but can't seem to figure out is how to restrict the list of Master Project Numbers based on the Firm selection.
In other words, If I select FIRM A, I only want master projects listed that are related to that particular firm.
I know I'm doing something wrong.
PS. In the past, people have just copied the application, wrote the script, and posted it... I appreciate this because it always works, but I learn nothing in the process. Would it be possible for someone to break down the scripting code for me so I don't have to keep posting to the forum?
