Lookup field acting up

I have a estimating application. I enter the esmate number in one form, then I use another form (line items) to look up the estimate number. The problem is that sometimes the other form doesn't "see" that number. Also, sometimes when I try to change the lookup number in the line item view, it won't let me. Anyone know what this might be?
