Picture Fields

I'm having a lot of problems with pictures I can't enter because of the 255 char limit for all of the fields contained in the picture field. Is there any way you can make it larger? I had to eliminate the "title" field completely and often have to shorten the alt text, but sometimes the only way I can get around it is to steal a copy of the image and store it in one of my directories instead of it's original source in order to be able to use it. (I have permission to point to the image at it's original source but not to save a copy.)
