Potential Custom Field that References the Grand Total of a Quote or Sales Order

I have tried a few times to create a custom field in the Potentials object that reads the Grand Total from a Quote or Sales Order. Unfortunately, I have not been able to get this to work. Does anyone know how to get this to work? Thanks in advance.
