Potential vs. Quote

Hi,
We've been using the basic functions of Zoho CRM for about a year. We are about to invest in improving our workflow and configuration of this system, along with connectivity to our Inventory System. One question I wanted to understand is - both from a technical and practical perspective - what is the difference between a quote and potential? 

As far as I've been able to determine, once a potential only reaches an outcomes - e.g. closed won, closed lost and never converts to a sales order and will always sit at a potential. What difference does a quote offer? Can a lead be convertd directly into a quote - if so, what are the limitations of this vs. converting into a potential?
