Problem after 3.0, dynamic picklist causing data loss

First, I love the updates!
However, they seem to have caused a big problem for my school Merit application.
When a teacher goes to enter a new behavior entry for a student, the first three items on the form are Teacher, Homeroom, and Student. All three are dynamic lookup dropdowns and after selecting Homeroom the Student picklist is updated to only include students within the selected homeroom (before the selection is contains all students in a grade level). I added code on Validation that looked to see if the teacher decided to skip the homeroom selection and just pick a student from the full (non-filtered) list, in which case it would lookup the correct homeroom and add it to the entry before submitting.
After 3.0: When a teacher adds a behavior entry by selecting a Homeroom first, which filters the student list, and then selecting the student, the entry is submitted but the student name is stripped out completely. I also noticed a "Log Details" appear that says:
> Error occured while executing on success script
>> unable to update data on the form variable null
>>> error occured
The odd thing is, that if a teacher just selects the student from the full unfiltered list, leaving Homeroom blank, the entry is submitted perfectly fine.
Please help! This refers to both Edison 6th Grade Merits 2008-09 and Edison 8th Grade Merits 2008-09, and I believe they both have support access granted.
