REGEX and Wildcards to specify Variable Criteria?

Zoho is utterly simple and wonderful to use.
And as one goes further trying more challenging stuff.. one realises that:
Simple commands become powerful if they can manipulate the 'relevant data'.
I was wondering, if there was an updated scripting guide to narrow down Variable 'Criteria' . Wildcards? Regular Expressions within the script?
This would help parse text and dates and numbers.. in a far more flexible way,
and could give rise to data munching functions
as my apps get hungrier by the day .. to be fed with a more balanced diet, including junk food, not just neatly formatted text, and numbers.
