Removing the edit option

I cant seem to get rid of the 'edit' option when embedding my database in my site. I have made the application both public and private and 'edit' is still showing. Naturally, I dont want site visitors to be able to randomly edit my database. There is not a check alongside the allow users to edit option in set permissions. I dont know what else to try? Please help..
