Restricting items on a "view"

Restricting items on a "view"

I would like to be able to restrict the items shown on a view, based on user input, as opposed to a using a fixed, pre-set criteria when I set up the view.

For example, The user inputs an email address, and the view shows only the relevant records that contain that address in a particular field.

Can that be done?
