Set View Criteria: How can you specify "is empty"?

I have just racked my brains and plowed every resource to come up with this solution with no luck.

I want to create a view with restricted criteria where a "fieldname" is empty.  This helps me know which records need to be updated.

Many resources point to creating a view where a fieldname is not empty, but doing the opposite has not worked.  Can anybody walk me through this?
