Spreadsheet vs. Grid view

The UI in the designer uses the word "spreadsheet".
I have a view set as spreadsheet, but it is rendering as a list.
Why is this? What are the limitation of the spreadsheet view.
I'm assuming that I have a field included in the view that is forcing it to switch from the selected spreadsheet view to a list view.
But, when I search help for spreadsheet view I get no hits. Frustrated. Only after spending too much time search did I learn that the help files use the term "Grid" view.
This is very frustrating that you do not use the same terminology across your system. Don't even get me started on you use of things like list, pick-list, drop-down, check box, which all use very different terminology and all mean the same thing.

So.
1) why is the view not rendering as a grid, what are the field limitations?
2) please use consistent terminology.
