Total a column

I working on an application to allow users to track when they have done certain tasks. The administrator should be able to go back and get various reports. One report would be the total number of tasks an individual has performed. Another report would be the total number of tasks performed by all individuals. In each case, the code needs to use a formula to get a count of an entire column. I know that it is possible to add two or more fields within a row, but is it possible to get a sum of all rows a certain field?
