The attachment field/column is very important to us because when looking though a list view, you can see which items have attachments. However we also take advantage of custom views to see our custom fields in columns. However the usefulness of custom views is greatly reduced by the fact that we cannot use the attachments column in them, which means we have to constantly switch back and forth between views, for what should be possible with one view.

Since every other column is availabe for custom views, I can only guess the lack of the attachments column was an oversight. Please add this capability.
