The audit log does not mention any modification of accounts from an import.

I imported a list of 300 accounts, 291 of them were already in Zoho but needed to be updated. So a total of 9 brand new accounts were entered. These 9 new accounts are the only things listed in the audit log, not mentioning the overwriting of 291 accounts.

This is a very big thing to miss. I know you can look it up in the Import History, but I am worried this could be missed easily as the information in Import History disappears after 30 days.
