Automation to Assign the Owner of a Lead ?

I need to find a way to set up an automated event that will change/assign the owner of a lead. This is extremely important data for profitability and employee performance. Let me explain how we use Zoho CRM and what I need.

-We generate leads through google adwords. 
-Our salesman call and disposition these leads. 
-Each of our salesman have their own user in Zoho CRM.

Each lead we generate defaults the field "Lead Owner" to our admin Zoho account.
Each lead has a field "Status" where our salesman claim and disposition leads.
      - Status is changed to "Attempting to Contact" by our salesman, before being dispositioned otherwise.

*The problem: The leads are not being assigned to any specific salesman, thus I cannot generate reports for leads taken by day/week/month per salesman.

I have been trying to create an Automation event that will trigger when the status is first changed to "Attempting to Contact". Once triggered I want this event to change the "Lead Owner" to the user that made the change.  

How can I accomplish this?
