Bank Register UI / UX Suggestions
I find that the default register layout for bank accounts in Books is inefficient. Lots of space is dedicated to information that isn't particularly useful, and there's low information density. A couple of specific suggestions:
- Emphasize Vendor / Customer / Account, De-emphasize Type - Right now, the layout has in large font the type of transaction (journal entry, transfer, expense account, etc.), and the party of the transaction in much smaller type. This seems backwards to me. Having a large "Split" or "Journal Entry" doesn't tell me a whole lot, while seeing the vendor name or customer name means a lot more.
- Replace Status Words with Icons - The line item status is not terribly important to many people, and when it is, the difference between cleared and reconciled is about all they care about. It seems like those statuses could be replaced with much smaller symbols, which would allow space for more information.
- No Memo Column - This one is really tough to get used to for me. Seeing details for oddball transactions in the register really helps when keeping watch over the books. Even if it was a symbol that could be clicked on to pull up the memo in a tooltip type display or something, that would be great.
- GL Display - Maybe I'm too old school, but not seeing the GL number with accounts bugs me. It would be nice to have the option to turn those on.
- Give the Option to Densify - I've got a 27'' monitor, and I only do bookkeeping on a desktop. That's not an unusual setup. Why is everything so spaced out that I can only see 9 transactions at once? A full 1/3 of the screen is taken up by a bloated header + the browser tabs. Add to that the excessive spacing, and it feels like pulling teeth to actually see information. Bookkeeping is a very functional pursuit; please give us the option to compress the interface to see more information at once.
I hope this feedback helps!
