Banner as Slide Show

Is it possible to have a slideshow as the banner for the home page. When I try to add a slideshow with my side bar, the slideshow is smaller and doesn't span the entire length of the screen. Is it possible to make the slideshow as big as the banner without removing the sidebar? Thanks.
