Can Accounts and Contacts share customer fields?

Can Accounts and Contacts share customer fields?

Is it possible to have a single custom field that shows up on account and contact record?

For example:
- I would like to use a field called 'Publication Type' and for this to show on the Account and the Contacts attached to that account.
