Can the Assignment Rules be applied to already imported leads?

Can the Assignment Rules be applied to already imported leads?

Hi,

I have created a number of assignment rules for my leads however they do not seem to be working - are they only applicable to newly imported leads or are they supposed to "update" the already imported leads?
