Can you have a Workflow for sending a contact an email?

Hi Guys :)

Know i can set a workflow alert that activates an email template to a user, role or group, but can i set a workflow that activates an email template to a contact??

ie: 
Workflow - New Potential Created with Potential Name - Product101

Alert- Send email template to Contact Name from Potential

WOULD BE AWESOME :)
