Case Id too long, Any ways to obtain a shorter version of the ID?

Case Id too long, Any ways to obtain a shorter version of the ID?

It's clear the "physical" record  ID is an excellent way to ensure uniqueness, now, asking a customer to repeat a 19 digit code is extremely cumbersome, I would ask them to repeat the last 5-6 digits, but is there any way to have it in a shorter unique version?
