Today let's see the difference between Archiving and Deleting a channel and also explore as to why they are essential.
Scenario 2: Zylker organizes Partner Summit every year in its campus. So a private channel
#partner-meet is created by the organizing committee to collaborate and get work done. The Partner Summit was spectacular and everything from food to stay was carried out in great detail by the organizing committee.
In the above two scenarios, channels were created based on needs and work was carried out in a smooth way. Once the work was done, there was no need for these channels. This is where Archiving and Deleting comes in. Archiving is done when data in the channel is currently not needed, but will be required in future. Deleting is done when the data should no longer be accessed.
- In 1st scenario, the engineers are working on a security feature. The data in #ddos-attack will be sensitive and so the channel must be deleted once the solution is derived, to maintain confidentiality of data.
- In 2nd scenario, the Partner summit will happen again the next year. During that time, the data in #partner-meet can be used for reference by the organizing committee. Hence this channel can be archived for now and unarchived the next year when the data is needed.
To delete/archive a channel, go to Channel Preview and click the last option in the bottom right corner and select Delete/Archive. To unarchive a channel, click on the (
+) of Channels in LHS, type the channel name in search bar, then select the channel and click Unarchive.
