Compose email?

I am brand new and cannot find any functions that help me to send emails. There is an icon for "New Note" but that's all. There is no email recipient address field for that function so I can deduce that is not it. I took a tour and saw on an example that there were icons on the far right hand side that had a pencil so I am thinking that might be the compose function but I do not have it. Any suggestions? Thank you!
