Confirmation Email Best Practice

Hi, 

I need to create a workflow to send an Appointment Time Confirmation email to a lead. User is requesting to fire the email when an the Appointment Time field in the lead form has a value. However, my concern is if they key in the wrong date and time, multiple emails will be sent. 

What's generally the best practice around these types of emails?
