Custom Date Function to spell out date in merged results

We have a date of birth custom field in our Contacts. We have a mail merge that fills in the date of birth. However, in the merged document, we want the date to spell out - so 1/1/1995 would display as January 1, 1995

Can someone point me in the right direction?
