Custom Lookup Field - Tedious to work with

Is there a way to make the customer lookup fields behave like the standard lookup fields in these two ways?

1) Ability to start typing in the lookup field and it will search for matches as I type.  Right now, it opens a popup and then I have to search.  After doing this thousands of times, it is a HUGE time killer!!

2) Ability to roll the mouse over the specific lookup box to edit the field.  As of now, I have to click edit on the entire record.  Again, after doing this thousands of times, it is driving me insane!
