Deals and Reports

Hi there. This is a potentially really dumb question, so please no judgement! New to Zoho and trying to help a company navigate how they use it.

This company I'm working with is only using Leads and Contacts. They've never used Deals for any sales opportunities/sales cycle. But they are wanting sales data out of Zoho (e.g. number of leads that turned into contacts (what they think of as a contract/closed sale) in a given time range. I don't see how that's possible without using Deals. Am I on the right track with that? Is it correct that using the Deals module would be needed to have contacts be considered at some phase in a sales cycle? Otherwise, it seems like they are just using Zoho as an address book. Am I on the right track or does anyone see how Leads and Contacts would somehow produce "Sales" reports (lost/closed, etc.)? Or even just a report that shows how many Leads were converted to Contacts in a given time range. Hope all that makes sense!
