Default Field Value When Converting Lead

I have setup a custom, boolean field in my Contacts table that has "Enable by Default" active. This works as expected (default value = TRUE) when I select "New Contact" to create a new record, however, when I select "Convert" Lead, then the default value is FALSE.

Is there any way to change this behavior or have I missed something?
