Definitions

We are struggling with knowing when to assign a connection as a "Contact" a "Lead" or "Account". I have rad the definitions on your help menu. When I first make a connection at a tradeshow should I enter it as a Contact or a lead? Should contacts always be attached to a lead or account? Do they convert?
