Email Analytics: What is Total Records?

What is "Total Records" in the email analytics reports?
For example, this help file defines Opened as emails that have been seen, and opened by the recipients.
If you add up all the rows in the report, that is equal to the "total records" but what does that represent? What does each row represent?

Does each row (record) represent a lead or contact that was emailed?  So if the total records is 10, does that means a total of 10 emails were sent?
