Email extensions

I cannot seem to find an answer to this (maybe I am not looking thoroughly enough). How do I add email addresses to the contact list that are NOT in a .com domain? I am from the Netherlands and when I try to add someone@somesite.nl, it keeps telling me to add a valid email address??
