Export Report to Excel - Numbers show as "Number Stored as Text"

Exporting a report from CRM to Excel 2010 results in numeric and currency columns showing as text values rather than numeric values in Excel. Each numeric cell will have an error indicator as shown below. Converting these cells to numbers has to be done cell-by-cell which is unacceptable. Exporting as CSV and opening in Excel 2010 resolves the issue, but I think exporting to Excel should be modified to work properly.
