Formulas in Zoho-CRM-Making what should be simple impossible

I'm a fairly intelligent person, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to create a simple freaking formula.....

There's a "formula =" above the box you create the formula.....which to me means that the name of the field I'm ATTEMPTING to create is "Field Name" = after which it appears that you need higher level math skills to even create formula where syntax is correct and allows the field to work properly.

What's wrong with having a SIMPLE math calculation like ("Field A" X "Field B") + Field C = the Value of the field you are trying to create?  Why do I need to identify "functions" of which I ONLY understand ABS in the most rudimentary way? 

Really, why is this portion so NOT intuitive? 

On an entirely different note....how difficult would it have been to allow the quick task field that recently became a pop up box be an ALTERNATIVE....it's great for customer facing task creation, but not for back end task creation.
