A simple mockup. The recent items would drop down when clicked on or hovered over. The list would retract as soon as you moved your cursor off any part of the list.

List 10 instead of 5 with maybe a link to "View More..." at the bottom.

not sure where to put the "search layout" link and "show only my records" check box.
